Beastquake!
On January 8, 2011, during the NFC Wild Card game vs. the New Orleans Saints, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch broke 9 tackles and ran 67 yards for a touchdown that won the game for the Seahawks. The Seattle fans - known as the 12th Man - cheered so loudly during that play that it caused a small earthquake in the area around the stadium. Find out a little more about the "Beastquake" - and the work the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network carried out as a result of this event - here.

The Science
Because of the Beastquake, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network decided to carry out ground shaking experiments during the January 11, 2014 divisional game vs. the New Orleans Saints and the January 19, 2014 NFC Championship game vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
They placed seismographs in various locations around and in the stadium in order to test equipment that will be used to monitor aftershocks following an earthquake, as well as to provide training for scientists. You can find out more about these experiments on the Seahawks page the PNSN set up on their website. |
